Swimming Pool Water Facts

January 19, 2021 By Mel Wolfe

It’s common knowledge that swimming pools can be contain many germs if not properly maintained. There are also a ton of misconceptions about the cleanliness of a swimming pool. People relate cleanliness to site and smells. This isn’t always the case.

Swimming Pool Misconceptions:

  • People actually sweat while swimming in the pool. This is why swimmers need to hydrate, especially on hot days.
  • Smelling bleach? That doesn’t necessarily mean that there is enough or too much chlorine in the pool. When a pool is properly cleaned and maintained, then there shouldn’t be any bleach smell at all.
  • Water doesn’t cause red eyes. Contaminated water causes red eyes. According to scientists the chemicals in the water don’t contribute to red eyes. Red eyes happen when pool water is contaminated. Ewww….
  • Swallowing pool water can make you sick, but not by what you think. Chlorine in the pool water isn’t usually to blame for becoming ill after accidentally inhaling pool water. You guesses it, it’s usually pool contaminants that are the culprit.
  • Swimmers ear? Unfortunately, again, it’s not your pool water that is the issue. Swimmers ear is usually caused by active bacteria in the pool water. Be sure to clean your pool as often as possible.
  • More and more people are getting sick from swimming pools each year. With that said, your pool water needs to be clean and maintained properly. If you cannot handle or don’t have the time to clean your pool get a quality pool service company.

Cleaning Your Hot Tub?

January 12, 2021 By Mel Wolfe

Whether you’re looking to purchase a hot tub or currently own one, there is built in maintenance that goes along with it. You should know that cleaning your hot tub is all part of the spa ownership experience. If you are new to hot tub ownership or don’t know how to clean your hot tub, it is time.

Why Clean Your Hot Tub?

Hot tubs need to be cleaned and drained on a regular basis. Yes, there are chemicals and filtration and additional provisions built in, but there is also “gunk”. Gunk is everything from body oils, lotions, cosmetics, sweat, hair products, the list goes on and can get worse. All of this “gunk” creates bacteria and biofilm. It can get really gross. So, when is it a good time to act?

How Often?

It is a good idea to drain and clean your hot tub quarterly. This is putting aside any emergency cleaning (or if you can’t keep your water clear). Remember, preventing bad spa water is always better than needing to correct it.

Before You Drain…

Your spa lines need to be flushed. Biofilm can happen even if your chemicals are on point. Bacteria love biofilm, it’s their food. You will need to add a cleaner to your hot tub to flush the water lines. This is a special type of cleaner formulated to break down biofilm. Make sure you follow the directions on the back of your spa cleaner (or spa purge). Your spa will need to circulate for a minimum of 20 minutes, but preferably overnight. Please note, spa cleaner may create gross foam. This is a good thing. It means your cleaner is working.

It Is Time.

Caution. Avoid electrical shock. Turn off your power breaker before you do anything else. It is a good idea to check your city’s ordinances to ensure you’re adhering to the law when emptying your hot tub. Now, hook up the hose and let your tub empty. During the emptying process, you can move your house around so water doesn’t build up in one place.

  • Clean or replace your spa filters. This depends on how old they are and what type of condition they are in.
  • Spray down your hot tub shell with diluted white vinegar, shell cleaner, or a bleach solution. Wipe it down thoroughly to remove any hidden algae or bacteria. Remember to rinse.
  • Check all jets. These need to be open to reduce the risk of water pressure issues.

It is now time to refill. Remove the drains. Do not leave your hot tub unattended while filling. It is also a good idea to use a hose filter when refilling your hot tub. Use this time to clean your spa cover as well. Once your hot tub is at desired level you can turn your breaker back on.

Your Type Of Pool Filter?

January 4, 2021 By Mel Wolfe

All swimming pools are not created equal. You need to know your pool. Pool owner mistakes are caused by insufficient knowledge of pool equipment. This is one main reason why hiring a pool service is best to properly maintain your pool. With that said, there are three main types of pool filters (sand filter, cartridge filter, and diatomaceous earth filter or DE). Let’s explore each type.

  • Sand Filter – This type of filter uses special sand. Sand filters can remove particles up to 20 microns. They typically last between 5 – 10 years. This is the oldest form of filtration for swimming pools. Sand filters clean by letting water flow into the filter and pass through the sand. Debris then gets stuck in the sand and then allows the clean filtered water back into the pool. It is important to note that this type of pool filtration system requires regular maintenance.
  • Cartridge Filter – Instead of using sand, this type of filter uses a fibrous element which water passes through. The maintenance for cartridge filters is less than sand filters. They are very similar to the air filters used in your car. Cartridge filters can typically trap debris up to 10 microns. This type of pool filter usually lasts between 1-3 years before needing to be replaced. These are commonly used in above ground swimming pools.
  • Diatomaceous Earth Filter (DE) – This type of filter cleans by passing water through a thin layer of DE that is coated onto a grid. Like sand filters, DE filters require backwashing to remove debris from the filter itself. This is usually completed annually. Older DE filters may require more frequent backwashing.

Pool filter maintenance depends on your filter type. It is important to know what type of pool filtration you have. Swimming pool filters are often called the kidneys of pool equipment. They need to be maintained on a regular basis. Contact a reliable pool service company if pool maintenance seems challenging.

Water Bugs? In Your Swimming Pool?

December 28, 2020 By Mel Wolfe

Ewww…water bugs! In your pool!?!? Let’s face it, your swimming pool is not meant to be a home for water bugs or other creatures. To them, it looks like a perfect place to hang out, eat, and reproduce. This is less than ideal for the pool owner. Although, water bugs like water boatman and backswimmers are pretty harmless they can bite. There are some steps that pool owners can take to get rid of water bugs and keep them from returning.

  • The first thing to do is remove all the bugs from your pool. Use a skimmer to scoop them out of the water. Keep in mind that water boatman fly and may do so when you are trying to scoop them out.
  • Next, manually vacuum your swimming pool. Be sure to remove all the debris from the bottom of your pool.
  • Third, test your pool water. Be sure your chemicals are on point. These types of bugs like algae and most likely in your pool because you have algae growth. Adjust your pool chemicals to the appropriate levels. This your means pH and alkalinity too.
  • Shock your pool and then run your pool pump. You will need to use enough shock that will remove the algae in your pool. We recommend doubling the dosage of pool shock. Remember to shock your pool at night.
  • Keep them from coming back. You will need to eliminate their food source: algae. This means maintaining your pool and its chemicals. Be sure to scrub your pool tiles, keep proper chemical levels, and vacuum often.

Pool Insurance: Under-covered, Over-covered, Or Just Right?

November 3, 2020 By Mel Wolfe

Do you know what your pool policy covers? Swimming pool policies are all different. There are many factors that take place when it comes to swimming pool coverage. Above ground, in ground, flood zone, concrete, fiberglass, depth of pool, etc. the list goes on when determining type of coverage and how much. Cheaper isn’t always better when it comes to pool insurance. In that regard, expensive coverage isn’t always better either. Why have coverage for a Ferrari when you drive a Chevy pick up? With that said, pools are a liability and homeowners are liable for any children who use their pools, whether they have permission or not. So how do you know what’s the right amount? Below are some questions to ask when deciding on pool insurance coverage.

Pool Insurance FAQ

  • Does My Homeowners Policy Cover damage to the pool?
The type of coverage varies weather your pool is in ground or above ground. An in ground pool will most-likely have an additional fee to your premium where an above ground pool may be covered under “personal property” (like a watercraft).
  • What Are Insurance Requirements?
Insurance companies require you to comply with the laws of the local municipality. You will need to have an approved fence/pool cover to enclose the pool, correct permits, and proper pool maintenance just to name a few.
  • Why Do Some Claims Get Denied?
Policy holders are required to keep proper pool maintenance. Any damage to the pool, it’s surroundings, or even equipment due to negligence most-likely wont be covered. The same goes for unapproved structures like water slides and diving boards.
  • What is the average Cost Of Pool Insurance?
The cost of insurance varies depending on your pool size, type, value etc. Premiums can be effected by your coverage limits as well. On average, homeowners pay an additional $25 -$75 a month for coverage.
  • Umbrella Policy?
Talk to your insurer about an umbrella policy. It is an extra layer of protection. Protect yourself from claims & ensure your pool has coverage if /when needed.

Should You Have A Pool Cleaning Service?

October 21, 2020 By Mel Wolfe

In short, yes. You should have a pool cleaning service to maintain your swimming pool. Many homeowners opt to maintain and service their pool themselves. In the long run, this can be less cost effective and more of a hassle. Let’s find out why.

  • Consistent Inspection – Pool service isn’t simply cleaning a pool. Having a good pool service means your pool is under inspection every time your pool is cleaned and maintained. A professional pool service will automatically inspect your pool and its equipment on a regular basis. This minimizes or even eliminates costly emergency pool service calls.
  • Proper Chemical Balance -A regular pool service maintains chemicals and ensures that your pool is crystal clean. Backwashing, filter & skimmer basket clean out, tile scrubbing, vacuuming are all serviced to maintain a healthy pool. This eliminates the need for extra chemicals because there isn’t a huge rise or fall in chemicals.
  • Peace Of Mind – Hassle free pool ownership is the best type of pool ownership. Having a pool service saves time. Time to enjoy your pool more. It eliminates the worry and the endless research needed to know how to correctly maintain your pool. Pool service takes the guessing out of maintenance. You no longer have to worry if your “doing it right”.
  • Avoid Costly Damage – Saving money by “doing it yourself”? Think again. Mistakes on pool maintenance can be very expensive. Did you know too high of chemicals can deteriorate your pool lining? Or incorrect backwashing can break your pool equipment? It’s better to have the experts take care of your pool. Eliminate the chance for mistakes by using a professional pool service.

Cracks In Your Pool

September 21, 2020 By Mel Wolfe

Pool cracks can be quite alarming. But, let’s not panic just yet. Some pool cracks can be repaired with great success. Cracks in your pool can be serious or superficial. A reputable and licensed pool company will be able to determine the severity for you. There are a couple ways that pool companies can perform leak detection and a few different types of remedies.

Why Cracks Happen

Cracks in your pool shell or deck can happen for many reasons. Soil condition is a common offender. This is the same reason sidewalks crack. Large tree roots is another. There are also common areas in your pool that tend to leak.

  • Light Niche
  • Skimmer
  • Plumbing

Dye Test Method

This test determines if your swimming pool is losing water or not. The dye test is a fairly quick test. It involves using a dye to see where or if water is leaking out of your pool. You should be able to tell immediately if your swimming pool has a leak.

Bucket Test Method

The bucket test method is just that…you use a bucket to show if your pool has a leak. This method takes a little more time because water levels are observed over a certain period.

Pool Crack Repair & Structural Repairs

Don’t let a swimming pool crack go unchecked! Some cracks may just be superficial in the finish of the pool and don’t leak. However, many will go all the way through the concrete pool shell which can allow water to leak out. Overtime this will compact or wash away the soil supporting the shell. If you are losing water and suspect a structural crack is your problem it needs to be stabilized as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Get Ready For The Storm

September 8, 2020 By Mel Wolfe

Are you ready for the storm? Hurricanes and strong storms are a common occurrence in Florida. Storm surge is historically the leading cause of hurricane-related deaths in the U.S. (according to ready.gov) It is a good idea to be prepared ahead of time and have an emergency hurricane/storm plan. There are many things you can do to prepare for strong storms and hurricanes.

Know Your Risk.

Start preparing now. Find out how heavy rain, water, and wind effect the area where you live. Remember, hurricanes effect more than just coastal areas.

Have An Emergency Plan.

Every person in your household should know exactly what to do. Keep in mind that everyone may not be in the same place (office, daycare, school, etc.). Remember to include your pets in your plan.

Gather Supplies.

After a strong storm or hurricane you may not have access to supplies for days or weeks.

  • Grillable foods – A great idea if the power goes out
  • Propane/Charcoal – So you are able to cook
  • Can goods – These can last a while
  • Don’t forget pet food
  • Fuel your vehicles – Gas stations may not be available
  • Bottled Water – If city water shuts down
  • Get Cash – ATM’s will not work if your area does not have power

Ready Your House For The Storm.

  • Have important documents? Make sure they are in a (waterproof) zip lock bag in a safe. Store your safe in a high and dry location.
  • Trim the trees that are in close proximity to your house. Flying branches can go right through screens and windows.
  • Over chlorinate your swimming pool when a storm is coming.
  • Do not cover your pool.
  • Do not drain your pool.
  • Remove all patio and deck objects from outside. They can become projectile objects and cause more damage.
  • Secure windows and doors.
  • Declutter drains and gutters.
  • Consider hurricane shutters.

Pool Problems…In Florida

September 1, 2020 By Mel Wolfe

Florida’s hot and humid weather brings on a range of common pool problems that go along with it. These problems aren’t Florida specific, but rather very common among pool owners in Florida. Below are some issues that Florida pool owners are likely to encounter and how to approach the situation.

Smelly/Cloudy Pool Water

You may have algae build up. One of the most common causes of smelly pool water is algae. Algae love warm, hot, humid weather (insert Florida here). Your pool needs to be on a strict maintenance schedule. Only this will keep your pool water crystal blue. If you don’t want the hassle & live in South West FL, Cannonball Pool Service can handle all of your pool service needs. We clean the pool, handle all your chemical balancing needs, identify problems, and perform pool repairs.

Pool Deck Cracks

Cracks in your pool deck can go deeper than the surface. These cracks can happen because of movement within the soil. Pool deck cracks can be dangerous and should be looked at by a professional as soon as they appear. The longer you wait, the more damage can happen (not to mention the more costly they become).

Pool Leaks

Water loss in your pool can seriously effect your pools’ performance. Chemicals become “off”, filtration doesn’t properly flow, and money gets wasted from having to constantly refill the pool when it has leaks. This is one of the most common problems in Florida. Remember, sometimes cracks aren’t big enough to see, but large enough to let water seep through.

After The Storm – How To Take Care Of Your Pool

August 17, 2020 By Mel Wolfe

Everyone talks about how to prepare your pool for a hurricane or strong tropical storm, but after the storm needs to be examined as well. After a strong storm or hurricane your pool needs to be attended to. Because, after the storm pool care is just as important as before the storm. You should resume normal operation of your pool only after all of these tasks have been completed.

After Storm Pool Care :

  • Foreign Matter – Remove debris, branches, leaves, mulch to prevent clogging in the suction lines
  • Reset Circuit Breakers – If you have lost power during the storm, you need to reset your circuit breaker(s) and pump timer(s) when the power is restored.
  • Equipment Care – Remove coverings from the pump motor or other equipment. If your motor has been submerged in water, it needs to be cleaned by a professional before usage.
  • Check Water Levels – Pool water needs to be at the proper level. It cannot be too high or too low. Be sure to check your water levels and adjust them accordingly. Empty your pump and skimmer baskets and open the valves to allow the water to circulate efficiently and effectively.
  • Chlorination – Super-chlorinate that is. Then circulate continuously until your water clarity returns back to normal. Remember there will be a higher level of debris in your pool for a bit. Your filters will need more attention that normal for the next few days.
  • Repair – There may be damage to outside protection barriers like screens, doors, and security fences. These safety barriers need to be repaired or replaced immediately.
  • Enjoy – Only when your pool is clean, clear, and chemicals are at appropriate levels.
